The word “stress” by definition is the state of a mental or emotional strain resulting from external factors and circumstances. These factors can be from work, relationships, life events, personal health, financial situations, and honestly any aspect of everyday life.
We can’t control when stress comes our way, but we have the power to manage the impact it has on our bodies and minds. Stress management looks unique from person to person, you have to simply find what works best for you.
Some studies show that any form of physical activity can be a great stress reliever! When we move our bodies, we release a hormone called endorphins, also known as the “feel-good” chemical. Endorphins are a natural mood booster and pain reliever, and the best part: our bodies make it naturally!
Physical movement creates a healthy outlet to release and cope with symptoms of depression and anxiety. Cortisol, which is the stress hormone released by our bodies, actually decreases when we are in motion and our heart rates are up.
Some activities to consider that will help reduce cortisol, increase endorphins, and decrease the negative impact of stress are:
- Aerobic exercises such as walking, running, jogging, cycling/spinning, swimming
- Yoga/Stretching
- Strength training such as HIIT, CrossFit, or weight-lifting
- Breathing exercises
- Being active! This can be yard work, dancing, cleaning around the house, and anything to get your body moving!
It’s important to listen to your body when discovering what works best for you and your stress management plan. Paying attention to how much sleep you’re getting and avoiding foods that are high in sugar and overly processed are excellent ways to control the impact of stress on our minds and bodies.
Stressors can be hidden in all aspects of life, and we have the power to control how they affect us. Take control and move that stress out!
